Business Showcase: Keystone Café – Where Purpose and Community Meet

Business Showcase: Keystone Café – Where Purpose and Community Meet

At the heart of Hoedspruit’s vibrant food scene lies a hidden treasure that offers more than just a delicious meal. It offers a story — one packed with purpose, passion, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.

Keystone Café, founded and lovingly run by Jackie and Shannon Tucker, is not just another café; it’s a sanctuary of sustainability, conscious living, and togetherness, wrapped in the warm hospitality for which Hoedspruit is known.

A DREAM ROOTED IN NATURE AND PURPOSE

The story of Keystone Café and its sister initiative, the Keystone Collection, began at a pivotal moment — quite literally during a three-night primitive hiking trail surrounded by South Africa’s untouched beauty. It was there, under the stars and amidst nature’s raw brilliance, that Jackie had her “lightbulb moment.”

Inspired by the ecological concept of a “keystone species” — like the humble yet vital aardvark — Jackie realized the profound importance of interconnectedness. A keystone species holds the balance of an entire ecosystem; similarly, the right values and intentions can uphold and uplift a community.

With her background in animal science, more than 16 years working in agricultural livestock and food production systems, and a culinary passion passed down through generations, Jackie envisioned a space that would do more than serve food. She dreamed of an eatery that would educate, nourish, and inspire — a place where every plate tells a story of mindful living.

Thus, Keystone Café was born: a conscious-based eatery devoted to serving fresh, sustainably sourced, and deeply nourishing meals that honour both the earth and its people.

MEET THE DREAMERS – JACKIE AND SHANNON TUCKER

Jackie and Shannon are more than just the founders of Keystone Café — they are its soul. Sisters in life and in purpose, the Tuckers have poured their hearts into creating a space that feeds more than just the appetite

Jackie, with her warm, intuitive nature, brings a nurturing presence that’s felt in every corner of the café. Whether she’s greeting a regular by name or adjusting a recipe to suit a guest’s needs, her care is genuine and constant.

Shannon, with her calm strength, gracious demeanour and thoughtful approach, helps keep everything running seamlessly — from sourcing ethical ingredients to ensuring the day-to-day operations reflect their shared vision. She brings a steady energy and an eye for detail that elevates every part of the experience.

Together, with a quiet gift for making people feel seen and valued, they’ve built Keystone Café not just as a place to eat, but as a sanctuary for meaningful connection and conscious living.

Every detail — from the music playing softly in the background to the seasonal ingredients on the plate — is intentional and crafted with care.

Their passion for sustainability, conscious eating, and genuine connection with people shines through in everything they do. Guided by their “keystone” values — health, connection, and community — they continue to shape a space where everyone feels welcomed, cared for, and inspired to live with purpose.

AN AARDVARK ATTITUDE – A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE

At Keystone Café, the food philosophy is about much more than ingredients. It’s a way of life, affectionately cultivating an “Aardvark Attitude.”

This philosophy encourages guests to be mindful of their impact on the environment, to appreciate where their food comes from, and to embrace a lifestyle of health, community, and sustainability.

Keystone Café champions the Sustainavore Movement — a concept pioneered by dietitian Diana Rogers, which advocates eating in ways that nourish personal health while restoring environmental balance.

In an era where fast food and mass production dominate, Keystone Café’s ethos feels almost revolutionary. It asks:

• What are we eating?
• Where did it come from?
• Who grew or raised it?
• How does it affect our bodies — and the planet?

Every wrap, smoothie, hearty salad, and steaming cup of coffee at Keystone Café is a testament to this mindful, conscious way of living.

“You don’t just eat at Keystone Café,” one loyal customer recently shared on Instagram, “you reconnect to yourself and your world.”

A MENU THAT TELLS A STORY

The menu at Keystone Café is a vibrant celebration of farm-to-table freshness. Whenever possible, produce is sourced locally — from farmers who share the same commitment to regenerative practices and ethical stewardship of the land.

Some highlights include:

• Signature Bowls packed with seasonal fruits, seeds, veg and superfoods
• Sustainably sourced free-range chicken wraps
• Vibrant vegan and vegetarian options that even meat-lovers rave about
• Kombucha, fresh-pressed juices, and artisan coffees supporting gut health and wellness
• Wholesome breakfast offerings ideal for locals and travellers fuelling up before safari

Whether you’re a seasoned Sustainavore or simply seeking healthy food in Hoedspruit, Keystone Café’s menu offers something deeply satisfying — food that tastes good because it does good.

FROM KAMOGELO CENTRE TO HOEDSPRUIT PRIVATE HOSPITAL

A New Chapter

Having opened in January 2023 at the Kamogelo Tourism Centre, Keystone Café quickly became one of the best cafés in Hoedspruit for locals and visitors seeking quality, health-conscious meals.

Their motto — “For Togetherness” — wasn’t just a slogan. It showed up in the sunny smiles of their staff, the comfortable tables designed for conversation, and the countless friendships forged over fresh meals.

In late 2024, another opportunity arose: the chance to relocate Keystone Café to the new Hoedspruit Private Hospital and Medical Centre.

The decision was guided by the same values that birthed the café. Where better to offer truly healing food than alongside a facility dedicated to physical, mental, and emotional wellness?

Their presence inside the hospital today is a powerful extension of their purpose — serving meals that nourish body and spirit, in a setting committed to healing and hope.

“We’re not just a café in a hospital,” Jackie shares, “we’re part of the healing journey.”
And the community agrees. Local reviews online call the new café “a light and uplifting space” and “a refreshing oasis for patients, staff, and visitors alike.”

Yes you read right – just because Keystone is based within the confines of our beloved hospital doesnt mean its exclusive to Hospital visitors only. Keystone is indeed open to the public whether its  a business lunch, family catch up or simply besties bonding over a Latte.

RECENT ADDITIONS @ KEYSTONE

A Second Coffee Location for On-the-Go Convenience

Keystone Café has expanded its presence within the Hoedspruit Medical Centre by opening a smaller, grab-and-go style coffee shop at the Medical Suites North. This addition is designed for healthcare staff, patients, and visitors who need a quick, high-quality coffee or snack without compromising on nutrition or taste. It’s a natural extension of their mission — bringing wellness, community, and convenience together under one roof.

A Cozy Boardroom for Meetings with Heart

In addition to their café spaces, Keystone has launched a beautifully designed, private boardroom available for hire. Perfect for team meetings, workshops, or small events, the room accommodates up to 12 people and includes high-speed WiFi, an HD TV for presentations, and catering options from the café. Whether you’re brainstorming or just need a quiet professional space, the Keystone boardroom blends functionality with the café’s signature warmth and style.

WHY KEYSTONE CAFE IS A MUST VISIT IN HOEDSPRUIT

Whether you’re seeking an invigorating post-safari breakfast, a healthy lunch, or simply a quiet place to reflect over a cup of ethically sourced coffee, Keystone Café is a must-visit for anyone who believes that food can — and should — be a force for good.

As I write this Im thinking to myself that Keystone is more than a restaurant, it’s a movement toward better living and all of us here at VisitHoedspruit.com cant help but smile and feel a sense of pride for all they’ve acheived and are contributing to our community.

In a world increasingly disconnected from real food, Keystone Café gently reminds us how beautiful — and powerful — that connection can be.

If you’re visiting Hoedspruit, looking for healthy food, passionate Hoedspruit restaurants, or seeking to support sustainable eating in South Africa, Keystone Café offers the ultimate combination of flavour, purpose, and heart.

Bosveld Centre: Community Connection and a Touch of the Wild

Bosveld Centre: Community Connection and a Touch of the Wild

Tucked between Hoedspruit’s citrus orchards and the wild edges of the greater Kruger lies the charming Bosveld Centre — a place that blends heritage with fresh purpose.

Once home to the beloved Bosveld Slaghuis (Butchery in Afrikaans), this nostalgic space has purposefully evolved into a meaningful gathering point for both locals and visitors alike.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Patrick Jordan, the driving force behind the Centre’s transformation. Over a coffee and the soft buzz of a weekday morning, we spoke about Bosveld’s evolving role and future aspirations within the Hoedspruit landscape.

Our conversation touched on thoughtful development, community collaboration, and the exciting vision for events that celebrate both the local culture and the surrounding bushveld lifestyle.

FROM SLAGHUIS TO SYMBOL

To understand Bosveld Centre’s present and future, we must first honour its past. For decades, Bosveld Slaghuis stood as a cornerstone of Hoedspruit — not just a butcher, but a social gathering spot deeply embedded in local life.

With Hoedspruit’s continued growth and the evolving tourism economy, it became clear that the space could take on a new purpose.

Now, under the guidance of Patrick, the hubs General Manager, the Bosveld Centre is evolving with intention.

“We didn’t want to erase what was,” Patrick explains. “We wanted to build on it — to honour the land, the people, and the spirit of this place.”

A HUB OF FAMILY, NATURE AND NOSTALGIA

The Bosveld Centre is now a vibrant, family-oriented destination offering something for everyone. Parents can enjoy a coffee while kids explore the playground, try mini-golf, or dive into paintball.

It’s a space where visitors can wander through boutique shops, taste homemade treats at the deli, or cool down with artisanal gelato.

What truly sets Bosveld apart though is its respect for nature. “We’re building around the trees, not over them,” Patrick points out.

His words capture the very soul of Bosveld Centre’s vision — a place where development doesn’t come at the cost of nature, but moves with it.

Unlike many modern projects where trees are often seen as obstacles, Bosveld Centre embraces them as part of its identity.

As far as possible, existing trees have been protected, woven thoughtfully into the layout rather than removed.

Gravel paths curve naturally between them, shaded seating invites visitors to linger under their canopies, and indigenous gardens mirror the untouched beauty of the surrounding bushveld.

This is not a space imposed on the landscape — it’s one that honours it, blending into the environment with humility and care.

MEET THE BUSINESSES BEHIND THE VILLAGE:

Bosveld Village is a true reflection of Hoedspruit’s spirit — a balance between everyday essentials and vibrant experiences.

With offerings spanning from fine deli goods, family cafés, and creative boutiques to health, education, outdoor adventures, and conservation, the Village is designed to serve the whole community.

It’s not just a shopping stop — it’s a destination for locals and visitors alike to enjoy, explore, and connect.

INTENTIONAL GROWTH  AND SIGNATURE EVENTS :

Patrick shared a bigger vision with me: Bosveld as a venue for cultural connection and celebration. “If we want Hoedspruit to be a year-round destination, we need anchor events that bring people together,” he explains.

The Centre is preparing to host four major annual events:

– A festive Christmas celebration with all the magic of a Lowveld holiday.
– A family-focused Easter weekend packed with activities, treats, and community spirit.
– The Hoedspruit Beer Festival, shining a spotlight on regional brews and good vibes.
– A proudly South African Braai Day, bringing people together with food, fire, and music.

These events are more than merely marketing tools. They’re designed to create moments and memories for locals and visitors alike.

ROOTED IN HERITAGE, GROWING WITH VISION:

Development in Hoedspruit comes with a responsibility: to grow without losing the town’s soul. As tourism and property investment rise, Bosveld Centre is committed to authenticity.

“We’re not rushing to fill every space,” Patrick says. “We want to evolve with the town — to offer what people need, not just what’s profitable.”

Future plans include a dedicated walking trail through the greenbelt behind the centre — an open, accessible space that encourages calm and connection to the environment.

THE ART OF COMMUNITY COLLABORATION:

Patrick sees untapped potential in local artists and artisans. “Hoedspruit is full of talent, and we haven’t tapped into that enough,” he admits.

The Centre plans to grow its partnerships by introducing seasonal markets, creative exhibitions, and workshops — creating platforms to showcase local culture.

He also stressed the importance of celebrating the citrus industry — a foundational part of Hoedspruit’s economy.

“Tourism is big — but agriculture built this place”. A long-term goal includes curating an exhibit that honours both the citrus legacy and the safari connection.

Q&A HIGHLIGHTS:

During my conversation with Patrick, we uncovered some of the heart and thinking behind Bosveld Centre’s unique approach. Here are a few standout moments and insights that capture the spirit of the project —

What sets Bosveld Centre apart?
“The history matters. Bosveld has always been part of the fabric of this community, and we’re just building on that foundation. There’s a sense of familiarity and heart here that you don’t always find in new developments.”

What’s your vision for the future?
“To grow steadily with the town, while always staying family-friendly and grounded in nature.”

How do you want to see the community evolve around Bosveld?
“With openness and collaboration. We want ideas. We want feedback. The Centre should feel like it belongs to everyone.”

A REFLECTION OF HOEDSPRUIT ITSELF:

The Bosveld Centre is more than just a commercial space — It’s Hoedspruit, written in stone and shaded by trees. It blends bushveld beauty with entrepreneurial spirit.

It honours tradition while welcoming change. It’s where families come to relax, where friendships are formed, and where community continues to thrive.

Thanks to Patrick Jordan’s steady leadership, the Centre is carving out a role that feels both grounded and dynamic — a space that grows with the town, but never loses touch with its roots.

Whether you’re a tourist passing through, a local with deep roots, or a newcomer falling in love with this corner of the world — the Bosveld Centre is a place worth visiting, and even more worth belonging to.

The Story of LA Baguette – Passion meets Persistence

The Story of LA Baguette – Passion meets Persistence

Covid and the pandemic is a distant memory and its safe to say that Hoedspruit – for some time now, has been back to her old ways, fashioning the hopes, and dreams for all those that stuck to their guns and believed “that this too shall pass”.

As part of our ongoing commitment to showcasing all the industry and determination our little town has to offer, we are super excited to share the remarkable story (like so many others) that is Fabian & Karine Jacquemin and our very own LA Baguette Cafe – situated at the newly opened Korongo Shopping Centre.

A testament to their dreams and determination, The Jacquemin’s story is not just about opening a Bakery / Eatery in a foreign country but about the incredible journey that led them here, the challenges they overcame, and the community they immersed themselves in along the way.

Join me as we unpack a story of cultural exchange and harmony

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS:

Fabian and Karine embarked on a significant life change, with a clear vision and a deep desire for a new beginning. Leaving behind their comfortable life on Reunion Island, where Karine was a revered teacher, and Fabian a skilled speech therapist, they ventured into South Africa, driven by the dream of starting anew.

Their discovery of Hoedspruit whilst on holiday became the canvas for their very first project: Ukuthula Bush Lodge, but as fate would have it just five months into their new adventure, the pandemic struck, forcing them to temporarily close the lodge and look for alternatives to stay afloat.

A FLOURISHING BAKERY AMIDST ADVERSITY:

Covid, whilst a challenge, presented an unexpected opportunity for the Jacquemin’s to embark on their second venture. With optimism as their compass, the couple felt inspired to bring their culinary heritage to Hoedspruit – and what better way than a French bakery / café.

Karine, having honed her craft with a French artisan baker’s diploma, was more than well-prepared for this endeavour. They adapted their recipes to the unique South African palette and incorporated local ingredients and preferences into their colourful menu. Hours of dedication were poured into perfecting their offerings, from the flour to the butter, ensuring that their products met the high standards they set for themselves.

HIGHLIGHTS AND SPECIALITIES:

LA Baguette Café offers an authentic French culinary experience. For first-time visitors, Karine recommends starting with their traditional pastries, like a wholesome croissant or a pain au chocolat (also known as a chocolatine, a type of Viennoiserie pastry) both pairing delightfully  with a rich cappuccino.

Their traditional French breads and the Parisian sandwiches are a nod to their roots, while the inclusion of local favourites like cheesecake and carrot cake signifies their embrace of the local  tastes. Its safe to say they have covered all their bases, with their ever expanding menu, catering to all preferences, offering a delectable range of light meals.

SOURCING LOCAL INGREDIENTS AND SUSTAINABILITY:

Committed to quality and sustainability, LA Baguette sources most ingredients locally, from the freshest produce to eggs from our farmers. This approach not only supports the local economy but also ensures their products are free from additives and preservatives. Importing from France was considered impractical due to the impact on pricing, prompting further innovation in adapting recipes to local ingredients.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE :

Integrating into the Hoedspruit community was a priority for the Jacquemin’s. They began very modestly, selling their baked goods on many a street corner, which ultimately led to a fantastic collaboration with a local supermarket, making every trip to the shops one to remember.

Their involvement subsequently grew to local events and markets, always aiming to share their French heritage with the local community. Their generosity which is evident, continues to shine through as all their unsold goods are regularly donated to our local retirement homes.

Karine’s background in education naturally extends within the bakery, where she engages consistently with her staff, upskilling them in the art of baking, all while bridging language barriers and cultural differences. This aspect of their business not only enriches the lives of locals but plants seeds of cultural appreciation. Their staff compliment is vibrant, engaging and they serve with a smile. Take note!

CHALLENGES AND REWARDS:

Navigating the language barrier and familiarising the nuances of French baking to a small traditional South African town has posed significant challenges.

However, Fabian and Karines’ perseverance, supported by the financial backbone of their lodge has allowed the bakery to not only survive but thrive. Truth be told we as a community are so glad they did – as the diversity, innovation and cultural immersion they add to our community is clearly evident, contributing greatly to the variety that so clearly distinguishes Hoedspruit.

FUTURE PLANS AND ASPIRATIONS:

As settling is not in their character, and with one eye on the future, the Jacquemin’s aspire to innovate further, introducing a host of new flavours and a variety of dishes that will introduce their patrons to the full gamete that French cuisine offers.

Collaborations with local lodges and restaurants are on the horizon further reinforcing their commitment and contribution to Hoedspruit’s growth and charm. Ultimately both Fabian and Karine desire to leave a legacy for their children and in so doing serve the community with passion. So watch this space!

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING BAKERS AND ENTREPRENEURS:

LA Baguette’s journey underscores the importance of dedication, perseverance, and patience. Their advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is as simple and uncomplicated as our natural setting – cherish every experience, see it as an opportunity to learn and improve and find joy in hard work as the satisfaction of your customers is all so worth it.

There’s no doubt that the Jacquemins’ story is a positively refreshing and vibrant addition to Hoedspruit and its continued evolution, so whether you’re a local keen on something different or a visitor here for the first time, be sure to pop in and say “Hi” to our “Fabulous Frenchies” and the wonder that is La Baguette Cafe.

After much planning, the perfect location was eventually found at the Driehoek Centre, marking the beginning of a vision and their dream to become a cornerstone of kids’ entertainment in Hoedspruit.

Tiny Town caters for the younger groups with primary focus on walking age to around 8 to 9 years.
