Business Showcase: Keystone Café – Where Purpose and Community Meet

Business Showcase: Keystone Café – Where Purpose and Community Meet

At the heart of Hoedspruit’s vibrant food scene lies a hidden treasure that offers more than just a delicious meal. It offers a story — one packed with purpose, passion, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.

Keystone Café, founded and lovingly run by Jackie and Shannon Tucker, is not just another café; it’s a sanctuary of sustainability, conscious living, and togetherness, wrapped in the warm hospitality for which Hoedspruit is known.

A DREAM ROOTED IN NATURE AND PURPOSE

The story of Keystone Café and its sister initiative, the Keystone Collection, began at a pivotal moment — quite literally during a three-night primitive hiking trail surrounded by South Africa’s untouched beauty. It was there, under the stars and amidst nature’s raw brilliance, that Jackie had her “lightbulb moment.”

Inspired by the ecological concept of a “keystone species” — like the humble yet vital aardvark — Jackie realized the profound importance of interconnectedness. A keystone species holds the balance of an entire ecosystem; similarly, the right values and intentions can uphold and uplift a community.

With her background in animal science, more than 16 years working in agricultural livestock and food production systems, and a culinary passion passed down through generations, Jackie envisioned a space that would do more than serve food. She dreamed of an eatery that would educate, nourish, and inspire — a place where every plate tells a story of mindful living.

Thus, Keystone Café was born: a conscious-based eatery devoted to serving fresh, sustainably sourced, and deeply nourishing meals that honour both the earth and its people.

MEET THE DREAMERS – JACKIE AND SHANNON TUCKER

Jackie and Shannon are more than just the founders of Keystone Café — they are its soul. Sisters in life and in purpose, the Tuckers have poured their hearts into creating a space that feeds more than just the appetite

Jackie, with her warm, intuitive nature, brings a nurturing presence that’s felt in every corner of the café. Whether she’s greeting a regular by name or adjusting a recipe to suit a guest’s needs, her care is genuine and constant.

Shannon, with her calm strength, gracious demeanour and thoughtful approach, helps keep everything running seamlessly — from sourcing ethical ingredients to ensuring the day-to-day operations reflect their shared vision. She brings a steady energy and an eye for detail that elevates every part of the experience.

Together, with a quiet gift for making people feel seen and valued, they’ve built Keystone Café not just as a place to eat, but as a sanctuary for meaningful connection and conscious living.

Every detail — from the music playing softly in the background to the seasonal ingredients on the plate — is intentional and crafted with care.

Their passion for sustainability, conscious eating, and genuine connection with people shines through in everything they do. Guided by their “keystone” values — health, connection, and community — they continue to shape a space where everyone feels welcomed, cared for, and inspired to live with purpose.

AN AARDVARK ATTITUDE – A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE

At Keystone Café, the food philosophy is about much more than ingredients. It’s a way of life, affectionately cultivating an “Aardvark Attitude.”

This philosophy encourages guests to be mindful of their impact on the environment, to appreciate where their food comes from, and to embrace a lifestyle of health, community, and sustainability.

Keystone Café champions the Sustainavore Movement — a concept pioneered by dietitian Diana Rogers, which advocates eating in ways that nourish personal health while restoring environmental balance.

In an era where fast food and mass production dominate, Keystone Café’s ethos feels almost revolutionary. It asks:

• What are we eating?
• Where did it come from?
• Who grew or raised it?
• How does it affect our bodies — and the planet?

Every wrap, smoothie, hearty salad, and steaming cup of coffee at Keystone Café is a testament to this mindful, conscious way of living.

“You don’t just eat at Keystone Café,” one loyal customer recently shared on Instagram, “you reconnect to yourself and your world.”

A MENU THAT TELLS A STORY

The menu at Keystone Café is a vibrant celebration of farm-to-table freshness. Whenever possible, produce is sourced locally — from farmers who share the same commitment to regenerative practices and ethical stewardship of the land.

Some highlights include:

• Signature Bowls packed with seasonal fruits, seeds, veg and superfoods
• Sustainably sourced free-range chicken wraps
• Vibrant vegan and vegetarian options that even meat-lovers rave about
• Kombucha, fresh-pressed juices, and artisan coffees supporting gut health and wellness
• Wholesome breakfast offerings ideal for locals and travellers fuelling up before safari

Whether you’re a seasoned Sustainavore or simply seeking healthy food in Hoedspruit, Keystone Café’s menu offers something deeply satisfying — food that tastes good because it does good.

FROM KAMOGELO CENTRE TO HOEDSPRUIT PRIVATE HOSPITAL

A New Chapter

Having opened in January 2023 at the Kamogelo Tourism Centre, Keystone Café quickly became one of the best cafés in Hoedspruit for locals and visitors seeking quality, health-conscious meals.

Their motto — “For Togetherness” — wasn’t just a slogan. It showed up in the sunny smiles of their staff, the comfortable tables designed for conversation, and the countless friendships forged over fresh meals.

In late 2024, another opportunity arose: the chance to relocate Keystone Café to the new Hoedspruit Private Hospital and Medical Centre.

The decision was guided by the same values that birthed the café. Where better to offer truly healing food than alongside a facility dedicated to physical, mental, and emotional wellness?

Their presence inside the hospital today is a powerful extension of their purpose — serving meals that nourish body and spirit, in a setting committed to healing and hope.

“We’re not just a café in a hospital,” Jackie shares, “we’re part of the healing journey.”
And the community agrees. Local reviews online call the new café “a light and uplifting space” and “a refreshing oasis for patients, staff, and visitors alike.”

Yes you read right – just because Keystone is based within the confines of our beloved hospital doesnt mean its exclusive to Hospital visitors only. Keystone is indeed open to the public whether its  a business lunch, family catch up or simply besties bonding over a Latte.

RECENT ADDITIONS @ KEYSTONE

A Second Coffee Location for On-the-Go Convenience

Keystone Café has expanded its presence within the Hoedspruit Medical Centre by opening a smaller, grab-and-go style coffee shop at the Medical Suites North. This addition is designed for healthcare staff, patients, and visitors who need a quick, high-quality coffee or snack without compromising on nutrition or taste. It’s a natural extension of their mission — bringing wellness, community, and convenience together under one roof.

A Cozy Boardroom for Meetings with Heart

In addition to their café spaces, Keystone has launched a beautifully designed, private boardroom available for hire. Perfect for team meetings, workshops, or small events, the room accommodates up to 12 people and includes high-speed WiFi, an HD TV for presentations, and catering options from the café. Whether you’re brainstorming or just need a quiet professional space, the Keystone boardroom blends functionality with the café’s signature warmth and style.

WHY KEYSTONE CAFE IS A MUST VISIT IN HOEDSPRUIT

Whether you’re seeking an invigorating post-safari breakfast, a healthy lunch, or simply a quiet place to reflect over a cup of ethically sourced coffee, Keystone Café is a must-visit for anyone who believes that food can — and should — be a force for good.

As I write this Im thinking to myself that Keystone is more than a restaurant, it’s a movement toward better living and all of us here at VisitHoedspruit.com cant help but smile and feel a sense of pride for all they’ve acheived and are contributing to our community.

In a world increasingly disconnected from real food, Keystone Café gently reminds us how beautiful — and powerful — that connection can be.

If you’re visiting Hoedspruit, looking for healthy food, passionate Hoedspruit restaurants, or seeking to support sustainable eating in South Africa, Keystone Café offers the ultimate combination of flavour, purpose, and heart.

Bosveld Centre: Community Connection and a Touch of the Wild

Bosveld Centre: Community Connection and a Touch of the Wild

Tucked between Hoedspruit’s citrus orchards and the wild edges of the greater Kruger lies the charming Bosveld Centre — a place that blends heritage with fresh purpose.

Once home to the beloved Bosveld Slaghuis (Butchery in Afrikaans), this nostalgic space has purposefully evolved into a meaningful gathering point for both locals and visitors alike.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Patrick Jordan, the driving force behind the Centre’s transformation. Over a coffee and the soft buzz of a weekday morning, we spoke about Bosveld’s evolving role and future aspirations within the Hoedspruit landscape.

Our conversation touched on thoughtful development, community collaboration, and the exciting vision for events that celebrate both the local culture and the surrounding bushveld lifestyle.

FROM SLAGHUIS TO SYMBOL

To understand Bosveld Centre’s present and future, we must first honour its past. For decades, Bosveld Slaghuis stood as a cornerstone of Hoedspruit — not just a butcher, but a social gathering spot deeply embedded in local life.

With Hoedspruit’s continued growth and the evolving tourism economy, it became clear that the space could take on a new purpose.

Now, under the guidance of Patrick, the hubs General Manager, the Bosveld Centre is evolving with intention.

“We didn’t want to erase what was,” Patrick explains. “We wanted to build on it — to honour the land, the people, and the spirit of this place.”

A HUB OF FAMILY, NATURE AND NOSTALGIA

The Bosveld Centre is now a vibrant, family-oriented destination offering something for everyone. Parents can enjoy a coffee while kids explore the playground, try mini-golf, or dive into paintball.

It’s a space where visitors can wander through boutique shops, taste homemade treats at the deli, or cool down with artisanal gelato.

What truly sets Bosveld apart though is its respect for nature. “We’re building around the trees, not over them,” Patrick points out.

His words capture the very soul of Bosveld Centre’s vision — a place where development doesn’t come at the cost of nature, but moves with it.

Unlike many modern projects where trees are often seen as obstacles, Bosveld Centre embraces them as part of its identity.

As far as possible, existing trees have been protected, woven thoughtfully into the layout rather than removed.

Gravel paths curve naturally between them, shaded seating invites visitors to linger under their canopies, and indigenous gardens mirror the untouched beauty of the surrounding bushveld.

This is not a space imposed on the landscape — it’s one that honours it, blending into the environment with humility and care.

MEET THE BUSINESSES BEHIND THE VILLAGE:

Bosveld Village is a true reflection of Hoedspruit’s spirit — a balance between everyday essentials and vibrant experiences.

With offerings spanning from fine deli goods, family cafés, and creative boutiques to health, education, outdoor adventures, and conservation, the Village is designed to serve the whole community.

It’s not just a shopping stop — it’s a destination for locals and visitors alike to enjoy, explore, and connect.

INTENTIONAL GROWTH  AND SIGNATURE EVENTS :

Patrick shared a bigger vision with me: Bosveld as a venue for cultural connection and celebration. “If we want Hoedspruit to be a year-round destination, we need anchor events that bring people together,” he explains.

The Centre is preparing to host four major annual events:

– A festive Christmas celebration with all the magic of a Lowveld holiday.
– A family-focused Easter weekend packed with activities, treats, and community spirit.
– The Hoedspruit Beer Festival, shining a spotlight on regional brews and good vibes.
– A proudly South African Braai Day, bringing people together with food, fire, and music.

These events are more than merely marketing tools. They’re designed to create moments and memories for locals and visitors alike.

ROOTED IN HERITAGE, GROWING WITH VISION:

Development in Hoedspruit comes with a responsibility: to grow without losing the town’s soul. As tourism and property investment rise, Bosveld Centre is committed to authenticity.

“We’re not rushing to fill every space,” Patrick says. “We want to evolve with the town — to offer what people need, not just what’s profitable.”

Future plans include a dedicated walking trail through the greenbelt behind the centre — an open, accessible space that encourages calm and connection to the environment.

THE ART OF COMMUNITY COLLABORATION:

Patrick sees untapped potential in local artists and artisans. “Hoedspruit is full of talent, and we haven’t tapped into that enough,” he admits.

The Centre plans to grow its partnerships by introducing seasonal markets, creative exhibitions, and workshops — creating platforms to showcase local culture.

He also stressed the importance of celebrating the citrus industry — a foundational part of Hoedspruit’s economy.

“Tourism is big — but agriculture built this place”. A long-term goal includes curating an exhibit that honours both the citrus legacy and the safari connection.

Q&A HIGHLIGHTS:

During my conversation with Patrick, we uncovered some of the heart and thinking behind Bosveld Centre’s unique approach. Here are a few standout moments and insights that capture the spirit of the project —

What sets Bosveld Centre apart?
“The history matters. Bosveld has always been part of the fabric of this community, and we’re just building on that foundation. There’s a sense of familiarity and heart here that you don’t always find in new developments.”

What’s your vision for the future?
“To grow steadily with the town, while always staying family-friendly and grounded in nature.”

How do you want to see the community evolve around Bosveld?
“With openness and collaboration. We want ideas. We want feedback. The Centre should feel like it belongs to everyone.”

A REFLECTION OF HOEDSPRUIT ITSELF:

The Bosveld Centre is more than just a commercial space — It’s Hoedspruit, written in stone and shaded by trees. It blends bushveld beauty with entrepreneurial spirit.

It honours tradition while welcoming change. It’s where families come to relax, where friendships are formed, and where community continues to thrive.

Thanks to Patrick Jordan’s steady leadership, the Centre is carving out a role that feels both grounded and dynamic — a space that grows with the town, but never loses touch with its roots.

Whether you’re a tourist passing through, a local with deep roots, or a newcomer falling in love with this corner of the world — the Bosveld Centre is a place worth visiting, and even more worth belonging to.

Business Showcase: La Baguette: Grit, Growth, and the Grace of Authenticity

Business Showcase: La Baguette: Grit, Growth, and the Grace of Authenticity

A STORY WORTH REVISTING:

Last year, we had the pleasure of sharing the story of La Baguette Café — a little slice of France in the heart of Hoedspruit. As part of our ongoing Business Showcase series, we experienced firsthand the journey behind this beloved eatery — a journey rooted in passion, perseverance, and a deep love for people, flavour, and community.

Today, we return not just to revisit their story, but to celebrate the continued growth of a business that has become a cherished part of Hoedspruit’s heartbeat — evolving in ways that were both unexpected and deeply inspiring.

A CATCH UP OVER COFFEE:

Recently, we sat down with Fabian and Karine Jacquemin, the duo behind the much-loved café, to find out how they’ve been navigating life, business, and the changing seasons in Hoedspruit.

What unfolded during our conversation was a quaint tapestry of resilience, reflection, and a growing sense of belonging.

FROM FRENCH FLAIR TO LOCAL FAVOURITE:

Over the past year, La Baguette has evolved from a passionate pursuit into a local institution—a café where regulars are greeted by name, new faces are warmly welcomed, and every pastry tells a story.

But beyond their renowned croissants and quiches, there’s been something quietly profound unfolding: a heartfelt commitment to adapt, integrate, and contribute to the town they now call home.

LEARNING THE LOCAL RHYTHM:

As French immigrants, Fabian and Karine have faced their fair share of cultural adjustments. Yet, rather than resist, they’ve leaned in—with grace.

They spoke of their intentional efforts to understand South African work culture, hospitality expectations, and the values that shape the people they serve and employ.

It’s this willingness to listen and learn that has shaped a work environment where mutual respect flourishes and where diversity is not just acknowledged, but celebrated.

“We’ve learned to see this country not only for its beauty but also for its burdens. We’re not just here to enjoy—we’re here to build, to work hard, to connect”Karine Jacquemin

And with that comes a quiet but undeniable transformation: the Jacquemins aren’t just business owners in Hoedspruit—they’re becoming part of its fabric. From language quirks to community traditions, they are embracing life here in ways both big and small.

CHALLENGES MET WITH COMMITMENT:

Of course, growth comes with its own set of challenges. Managing two businesses— La Baguette and Ukuthula Bush Lodge—has stretched their time and resources.

While the café’s cozy kitchen presents creative challenges, and the natural ebb and flow of staff has kept them on their toes, the underlying tone has alway remained one of commitment and not complaint.

“We’re learning every day,” said Fabian. “It’s not always easy, but every obstacle brings an opportunity to improve how we lead, how we serve, and how we care for our people.”

TASTING NEW HORIZONS:

Their progress is clear. They’ve recently secured a liquor license, allowing them to roll out an exciting new cocktail menu. Karine has also begun experimenting with flavours from her native Reunion Island—an effort that adds new layers of identity and storytelling to their menu.

Perhaps most heartwarming is the news that their son, currently studying in Pretoria, is planning to join the business. His bicultural upbringing gives him a unique lens—one that could bridge the gap between local roots and French flair in fresh, intuitive ways.

A BUSINESS WITH A BIG HEART:

In conversation, what stood out most wasn’t the milestones—it was the motivation. For Fabian and Karine, it has never been about creating a perfect French patisserie. It’s always been about creating connection: between cultures, between customers and staff, and between past dreams and present purpose.

WELCOME TO THE VISIT HOEDSPRUIT FAMILY:

This deepening commitment to Hoedspruit and its people is why we’re thrilled to now officially welcome La Baguette Café as Premium Partners of the Visit Hoedspruit community.

It’s not just about a logo or a listing—it’s about shared vision. They believe, as we do, that Hoedspruit is more than a destination. It’s a lifestyle. A Community. A heartbeat worth protecting and nurturing.

“More and more, we feel like we belong here. Hoedspruit feels like home.”Karine

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY, FLOURISHING IN PURPOSE:

And maybe that’s what makes this story so moving—not just the pastries or the progress, but the presence. The quiet, faithful choice to grow roots where you’ve been planted. To serve not just food, but people. To celebrate not just success, but shared humanity.

A WARM INVITATION:

So next time you visit La Baguette, take a moment to savour more than the coffee. Look around. You’ll see what happens when passion meets persistence—and when hearts truly align with a community.

Visit Hoedspruit, taste the journey, and toast to what’s still to come for this magic little eatery – our newest partner and most kindred of spirits – we look forward to adventure that lies ahead

Nourish Eco Village: Community meets Conservation

Nourish Eco Village: Community meets Conservation

Established in the heart of South Africa’s Lowveld, Nourish Eco Village offers an inspiring and transformative experience for travellers seeking to make a meaningful connection with the local community while immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the region.

Located just a short drive from Hoedspruit, en route to the iconic Kruger National Parks, Orpen Gate, this innovative non-profit organization is much more than a place to visit—it is a hub of sustainability, education, and cultural preservation.

For those visiting Hoedspruit (and locals too), Nourish Eco Village provides a unique opportunity to witness the impact of grassroots community development projects while enjoying an authentic and enriching cultural experience.

Here’s why this remarkable destination deserves a spot on every traveller’s itinerary.

A VISIONARY APPROACH  TO SUSTAINABILITY AND CONSERVATION:

Nourish Eco Village was founded in 2011 by Sarah Dawn Bergs, whose vision was to address the socio-economic challenges faced by communities living along the borders of protected wildlife areas. These communities often grapple with issues such as poverty, food insecurity, unemployment, and limited access to education—all of which can inadvertently fuel wildlife crime, such as poaching.

Recognising the intricate link between thriving communities and conservation, Nourish Eco Village set out to tackle these challenges holistically. Its mission, “Connecting Communities to Conservation,” reflects a deep commitment to creating self-sustaining communities that live in harmony with their natural surroundings. By addressing the root causes of poverty and wildlife crime, Nourish is working toward a future where people and wildlife can coexist.

EDUCATION: THE FOUNDATION OF CHANGE

Education lies at the core of Nourish Eco Village’s work. The organization believes that knowledge and skills, empower individuals to build better futures for themselves and their communities ultimately fostering a sense of self worth and independence.

Let’s take a look at some of their initiatives –

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT:

Nourish’s RISE Educare program focuses on early childhood development (ECD), providing crucial support to children aged 0–5. The program currently serves around 60 children at its own facility while supporting an additional six community creches through infrastructure development, teacher training, and the establishment of vegetable gardens to ensure food security. By investing in the youngest members of the community, Nourish is laying the groundwork for long-term growth and success.

GREEN KIDZ CLUB:

For older children, the Green Kidz Club provides a safe and stimulating after-school environment where learners engage in English literacy classes, environmental education, and creative activities such as music and art. By fostering a love for nature and teaching environmental stewardship, the program cultivates a new generation of conservation advocates who understand the value of protecting South Africa’s rich biodiversity.

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT: BUILDING SUSTAINABLE FUTURES

Economic empowerment is a key pillar of Nourish Eco Village’s approach to sustainable development. The SEDIWA Hub (Skills, Education, and Development for Independent Work and Advancement) provides training in permaculture farming, green building, computer literacy, and financial management. By equipping individuals with practical skills, Nourish is enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.

CRAFT AND CREATIVITY:

Nourish also supports local artisans and crafters by providing a platform for them to showcase and sell their products. From handcrafted jewellery and textiles to upcycled art, the on-site craft shop highlights the creativity and resilience of the local community. Visitors can take home unique souvenirs while directly supporting the artisans who create them.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE:

The Eco Village features a working farm that supplies fresh produce for Nourish’s feeding programs while serving as an agribusiness model for the community. The farm demonstrates the potential of sustainable agriculture to address food insecurity and generate income, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

CULTURAL IMMERSION: A TRUE TASTE OF SHANGAAN LIFE

One of the highlights of visiting Nourish Eco Village is the opportunity to experience Shangaan culture firsthand. Guided village tours provide an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of local residents, including traditional crafts such as mat-weaving and pottery. Visitors can also meet a traditional healer, who shares insights into ancient practices and beliefs that have been passed down through generations.

For food enthusiasts, the experience extends to the culinary traditions of the region. Guests can savour local delicacies such as homemade peanut butter, mielie pap (a maize-based porridge), and wild spinach. The village also brews its own artisanal beer, offering visitors a chance to taste a true slice of rural South Africa.

ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION

Travellers looking to extend their stay can book accommodation at Shik Shack Backpackers, located within the Eco Village. Designed with sustainability in mind, the backpackers’ lodge features unique and eco-friendly accommodations, including preset tents, teepees, and rustic huts. Communal facilities such as a swimming pool, bar, and fire pit provide a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The décor, made from upcycled materials, adds a whimsical charm to the space. For instance, bottle-top floors and recycled art pieces showcase the creativity and resourcefulness of the community. Shik Shack is also home to a few resident donkeys, whose playful antics delight visitors.

PARTNERSHIPS AND GLOBAL IMPACT

Nourish Eco Village’s initiatives have attracted attention and support from a wide range of partners, including local businesses, international NGOs, and global corporations.

Partnerships with organizations like Sasol have helped amplify the reach and impact of Nourish’s programs. For example, Sasol’s Rewards Mzansi Tour brought visitors to the Eco Village to learn about its work and contribute resources to the RISE Educare program.
