Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Hoedspruit is a captivating tour destination that offers a unique blend of wildlife encounters, natural wonders, and cultural experiences. With its proximity to renowned game reserves, picturesque landscapes, and a vibrant local community, Hoedspruit has emerged as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic African experience. In this blog post, we will explore the highlights and attractions that make Hoedspruit an enchanting place to visit.

MOHOLOHOLO REHAB CENTRE

The Rehab Centre is home to a variety of animals that have been injured to the point that they are not able to be released back into the wild. When faced with the difficult decision of what to do with such animals, the centre decided to provide a permanent home to these animals and use them as ambassadors to educate people on the importance of animal welfare.

The centre offers two guided tours between Monday & Saturday and an afternoon show on Sundays. Each tour begins with an introduction followed by a walk through the centre with one of the guides. While on walk through the facility you will hopefully get a better understanding of some of the issues facing wildlife in South Africa.
Entrance fees for 2023 are R180.00 per adult and R90.00 per child between 7 – 12 years old. Kids 6 and under are free.

BLYDE BOAT CRUISE

The Blyde Dam is near Hoedspruit and is right in the heart of the famous Blyde River Canyon. The dam itself is the result of the damming up of the Blyde River in 1963 to provide a stable water supply for irrigation and mining works in Phalaborwa.
A 90 minute boat cruise is offered on the dam that will give you a good look at the mighty Blyde Canyon and the chance to get up close to some Hippo, Crocodile and other animals that frequent the dam.

Cruise times may vary seasonally but generally times are 09H00 – 11H00 – 13H00.

Ticket prices for 2023 are R290.00 per adult and R170.00 per child under 2-12 years. No children under 2 are permitted.
There is also a entrance fee charged to enter the Blyde Nature Reserve of R35.00 per adult and R20.00 per child under 12 years. Prices subject to change.

PANORAMA ROUTE TOUR

A scenic full day experience that takes you along the Drakensberg escarpment to a variety of points like the Three Rondawels where you get incredible views over the Blyde River Canyon, known to be the third largest in the world. The Bourke’s Luck potholes is also an interesting point to view on the tour. Here you will see large cylindrical formations that have been carved into the rock by the swirling water over many years. Further on you will see Berlin Falls, and Lisbon Falls. Both are worth a visit and are equally charming. Wonderview offers breathtaking views over the lowveld and it meters from the parking area. God’s Window nearby, one of the more popular sites. This is quite a walk up the paved walkway with several viewpoints along the way where those who don’t wish to go all the way up can still enjoy. The top point goes through a unique rainforest ecosystem and is worth the extra bit of strain.

The pinnacle viewpoint is next and is also unique in its offering. A large quartzite pillar rises up from the forest below. The town of Graskop is nearby and a good place to stop for lunch. If time allows, Pilgrims Rest is a nice place to stop and explore. The old gold mining town is steeped in history. A return to Hoedspruit caps of the full day activity.

KRUGER PARK TOUR

Hoedspruit lies right on the doorstep of the Kruger National Park and is a very good location to explore the quieter central parts of the park. Orpen gate is normally the point of entry from Hoedspruit, and it very often delivers the goods, especially those early mornings. From the gate you generally make your way to Satara Restcamp where you have a Restaurant and a picnic facility where you can fry up some lunch. The camp also has a large shop and even a fuel station in case you need a top up. While the full day trip can be quite exhausting, it is worth all the sightings.

PRIDELANDS GAME DRIVES

The Greater Kruger Park now extends right up to Hoedspruit with the addition of the Pridelands property being included with Balule. All game drives are done in an open safari vehicle for maximum game drive enjoyment.

HERD – ELEPHANT EXPERIENCE

Elephant moments offers the unique experience of a close-up and respectful interaction with a herd of Elephants that have been rescued from certain death in Zimbabwe. Meet the Jabulani Herd at the Jabulani stables inside the Kapama Private Game Reserve.

The tour starts with an introduction to the centre before you are led out to meet a few members of the herd. You will have the opportunity to hand feed the Elephants and gain a very up close encounter with these majestic animals. Strictly no Elephant riding takes place at Elephant moments.

SUNCATCHERS HOT AIR BALLOON

Suncatchers have been operating their well-known flights in Hoedspruit since 2013 and this one-hour morning experience with the Drakensberg as backdrop is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Guests meet at the launch site just before sunrise where tea and coffee will be served while the balloon is inflated. The next hour will be spent gliding above the treetops to an elevation of 2000 feet, depending on the wind conditions.
