A STORY WORTH REVISTING:

Last year, we had the pleasure of sharing the story of La Baguette Café — a little slice of France in the heart of Hoedspruit. As part of our ongoing Business Showcase series, we experienced firsthand the journey behind this beloved eatery — a journey rooted in passion, perseverance, and a deep love for people, flavour, and community.

Today, we return not just to revisit their story, but to celebrate the continued growth of a business that has become a cherished part of Hoedspruit’s heartbeat — evolving in ways that were both unexpected and deeply inspiring.

A CATCH UP OVER COFFEE:

Recently, we sat down with Fabian and Karine Jacquemin, the duo behind the much-loved café, to find out how they’ve been navigating life, business, and the changing seasons in Hoedspruit.

What unfolded during our conversation was a quaint tapestry of resilience, reflection, and a growing sense of belonging.

FROM FRENCH FLAIR TO LOCAL FAVOURITE:

Over the past year, La Baguette has evolved from a passionate pursuit into a local institution—a café where regulars are greeted by name, new faces are warmly welcomed, and every pastry tells a story.

But beyond their renowned croissants and quiches, there’s been something quietly profound unfolding: a heartfelt commitment to adapt, integrate, and contribute to the town they now call home.

LEARNING THE LOCAL RHYTHM:

As French immigrants, Fabian and Karine have faced their fair share of cultural adjustments. Yet, rather than resist, they’ve leaned in—with grace.

They spoke of their intentional efforts to understand South African work culture, hospitality expectations, and the values that shape the people they serve and employ.

It’s this willingness to listen and learn that has shaped a work environment where mutual respect flourishes and where diversity is not just acknowledged, but celebrated.

“We’ve learned to see this country not only for its beauty but also for its burdens. We’re not just here to enjoy—we’re here to build, to work hard, to connect”Karine Jacquemin

And with that comes a quiet but undeniable transformation: the Jacquemins aren’t just business owners in Hoedspruit—they’re becoming part of its fabric. From language quirks to community traditions, they are embracing life here in ways both big and small.

CHALLENGES MET WITH COMMITMENT:

Of course, growth comes with its own set of challenges. Managing two businesses— La Baguette and Ukuthula Bush Lodge—has stretched their time and resources.

While the café’s cozy kitchen presents creative challenges, and the natural ebb and flow of staff has kept them on their toes, the underlying tone has alway remained one of commitment and not complaint.

“We’re learning every day,” said Fabian. “It’s not always easy, but every obstacle brings an opportunity to improve how we lead, how we serve, and how we care for our people.”

TASTING NEW HORIZONS:

Their progress is clear. They’ve recently secured a liquor license, allowing them to roll out an exciting new cocktail menu. Karine has also begun experimenting with flavours from her native Reunion Island—an effort that adds new layers of identity and storytelling to their menu.

Perhaps most heartwarming is the news that their son, currently studying in Pretoria, is planning to join the business. His bicultural upbringing gives him a unique lens—one that could bridge the gap between local roots and French flair in fresh, intuitive ways.

A BUSINESS WITH A BIG HEART:

In conversation, what stood out most wasn’t the milestones—it was the motivation. For Fabian and Karine, it has never been about creating a perfect French patisserie. It’s always been about creating connection: between cultures, between customers and staff, and between past dreams and present purpose.

WELCOME TO THE VISIT HOEDSPRUIT FAMILY:

This deepening commitment to Hoedspruit and its people is why we’re thrilled to now officially welcome La Baguette Café as Premium Partners of the Visit Hoedspruit community.

It’s not just about a logo or a listing—it’s about shared vision. They believe, as we do, that Hoedspruit is more than a destination. It’s a lifestyle. A Community. A heartbeat worth protecting and nurturing.

“More and more, we feel like we belong here. Hoedspruit feels like home.”Karine

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY, FLOURISHING IN PURPOSE:

And maybe that’s what makes this story so moving—not just the pastries or the progress, but the presence. The quiet, faithful choice to grow roots where you’ve been planted. To serve not just food, but people. To celebrate not just success, but shared humanity.
